Sending a message campaign by email

Send a one-off message campaign to members' inboxes as well as the app — the same message, in one of your own email designs.

A message campaign is a one-off: you write it once, pick who it goes to, and send it now or later. It always goes out in the app and as a push notification. It can now reach members' inboxes too — the same message, presented in one of your own email designs.

Before you start

  • You need an email design. Any of yours will do. If you have none, step 3 says so and links you to Emails to make one — duplicating your welcome under Your emails is a quick way to start. See Designing a club email.
  • You need to be the account holder. Only the account holder can send a message campaign by email.

Send one

  1. 01
    Choose Message campaign

In the Message Centre, open Campaigns and start a new campaign. Pick the Message campaign card and give it a name.

  2. 02
    Pick your lists

Choose which customer lists or campaign groups it goes to.

  3. 03
    Write the message

A subject and the message itself, as you would for the app.

  4. 04
Turn on Send it as an email too

Below the message, switch on Send it as an email too and choose a design under Which design. If you like, write an Email subject line — a subject written for a phone notification often reads short in an inbox. Leave it empty and the subject above is used.

  5. 05
    Review and send

The review step shows an Also by email card. It deliberately does not promise a number of recipients, because who can be emailed is only worked out at the moment of sending. Send it now, or schedule it.

Who gets the email

  • Only members who said yes to your offers, have given you an email address and have not unsubscribed from your club. That is usually fewer people than get the in-app message.
  • Within a daily limit. One business can only send so many emails in a day. If a send would take you past it, it does not go: the portal tells you how many you have sent today and how many this one would add. Turn the email off and the in-app message sends on its own — or send it tomorrow.

Your first email campaign is read by our team

The first time your club sends a message campaign by email, one of our team reads the email before it goes out. It happens once, not every time.

  • The in-app message and the push notification go straight away, as normal. Only the email waits.
  • The portal tells you so as you send, and the campaign shows Held for review in your list while it waits.
  • While it waits, the design it uses cannot be edited — so what we read is exactly what goes out.
Editing a scheduled campaign drops the email

If you schedule a campaign with the email switched on and then edit it, the in-app message keeps its place but the email half is dropped. If the email needs to change, delete the scheduled campaign and create it again.

A scheduled email uses its design as it stands at the moment of sending — so changes you save to that design in the meantime go out too.

Birthday, anniversary and review request cards

The campaign-type screen also shows Birthday emails, Anniversary emails and Review request emails. These are not one-off campaigns: they are automatic emails that are already written and already know who they go to, so choosing one opens that email's design instead of walking on through the wizard. See Birthday and anniversary emails and Asking for Google reviews by email.

What it does not do yet

  • Edit the email half of a scheduled campaign. Delete and recreate it instead, as above.
  • Tell you when a held campaign has been read. There is no separate notification — the campaign simply stops showing Held for review.
  • Count the email recipients in advance. The review step cannot know who will be emailed until the moment of sending.

In one sentence

Turn on Send it as an email too at the message step and pick one of your designs, and the message also goes to the inboxes of members who said yes — your first one after a quick read by our team.
